Obtaining a copy of your credit report and score will be helpful in creating your plan of action to reduce debt. There are several companies from whom you can get a copy of your credit report. Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union are the three major companies for credit reporting. Of course there are other companies you may wish to choose. It is recommended that you obtain a copy of your credit report when applying for new credit, and to check the status of your credit. Checking your credit report every 3-4 months is appropriate.
Once you have a copy of your credit report inspect it carefully. Up to 40% of all credit reports have mistakes and errors. If a lender is listed that you do not want on your credit report, or they do not belong, contact the company from whom you obtained your copy report to dispute the lender. Credit reporting companies are required to verify any lender that appears on your credit report within 60 days. If they cannot verify the credit lender they must remove it.
