And finally, beginning September 1, 2005, the Eastern states, including: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia, along with any who have not taken advantage of the free service, can obtain free copies of their credit reports.
How do I get it, you may ask? Of course you can contact any of the three credit bureaus by their toll-free numbers and they will send your copies to you. Or, you can simply go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get your free copy.
For starters, you'll need to supply your name, address, social security number and birth date. Then you may have to supply further details.
If you've moved within the past two years, you will have to supply them with your previous address. Then, to further determine if you are who you say you are, the credit bureaus or the above-mentioned website, will ask you a series of questions that only you would know the answers to. Like how much your mortgage. Be thankful for these extra security measures, with the uprising in identity theft, it is better to be safe than sorry.
