Even the smallest error on the report can cause you to be turned down for credit. This is why it's so important to obtain the copies of your credit report and read through them thoroughly. As soon as you find a mistake, report it to the correct credit bureau immediately. You will need to call them and likely have to submit again in writing. Keep track of dates and times that you have called and sent letters and names and direct extensions of people you talk to.
Once you have made sure your credit report is accurate, you want to keep it that way. Take advantage of the free credit report requirements from each of the three credit bureaus. Remember, you're entitled to one free from each per year.
Pay your bills on time, even if you can only pay the minimum monthly payments. Those payments are better than no payment at all in the eyes of a creditor.
Live within your means. Develop a budget and stick to it - no cheating! If you continuously spend more than you make the only thing you will become is further in the hole.
