One way to reduce your dependancy on credit cards is to sit down and make a basic monthly battle plan out that you will stick to, one which doesn't involve getting the "best credit card". Choose to pay your necessities first including food, utilities, rent and car expenses of any kind. This will also include all types of insurance plans. List what you need to spend to live conservatively, but comfortably.
Create a small "set-aside" for emergencies and perhaps ten percent for a rainy day - putting it into an account that you never touch. Now, set aside an account for taxes of any kind and only use the account for that purpose. Again, set aside a certain percent for medical, cosmetic, and sundries. Create an education fund for the family. This includes computer expenses, books, training manuals and classes.
Don't forget to budget for an entertainment fund which would include hobbies, and all pet expenses including their medical expenses.
Finally make a luxury account for occasional splurges on gifts and presents to yourself and others. From a spa gift certificate to a new boat. Save up in these accounts. Don't mix any of them or dip into one to do another expense. Only spend from what you have, NOT from what you Want to have, money-wise. You will NEVER miss having a credit card."
