If you are considered a low income family, in particular, there may be help from the state of Connecticut for debt consolidation. Not all states have these debt consolidation programs in place, but the Connecticut state government may be able to help you.
However, whether or not you live in Connecticut, state programs aren't the only ones offering debt consolidation relief. There are several companies locally and nationwide who offer services to help consumers get out of debt. You've seen the ads on the television and heard them on the radio for sure. You can also find hundreds, maybe even thousands, of companies offering debt consolidation help by doing an Internet search.
Before choosing a company, particularly any that you find on the Internet, the most important thing you need to inquire about is the fee structure. Most of the companies charge a fee that isn't a standard flat rate, but rather is dependent on how much debt you owe.
Connecticut is no different than any other state when it comes to non-profit debt consolidation services. There are several legitimate non-profit groups that can help you, but equally there are many illegitimate companies who could ruin you financially.
If a company is truly non-profit, then the services they offer are free. They get their money through government agencies and fund raising. If a "non-profit" tells you that you'll have to pay a fee to use their debt consolidation service, then you should call them on the carpet about it. Tell them you know that there should be no fees. The best defense against a company trying to take advantage of you is information!
