Cleaning up Nasty Errors on Your Credit Report (cont.)

Contributed by Roland Head

When your credit report has been changed, ask the credit bureau to send the amended credit report to all parties that have checked your credit through them in the last six months.

When you are unable to clean your credit report

Sometimes the reporting bureau will simply assert that according to the information they have, the credit report is correct as stands. Then you should ask who gave them this information. They may hem and haw but be persistent. When you get the party's identity contact them (as in the case of the creditor above)and show them the facts. Ask them to send you a letter reflecting the facts and forward this on to the reporting bureau.

The reporting bureau may still refuse to make the changes. They have been known to be stubborn in these matters.

You can then request a space next to your contended entry in which you write an explanation of your side of the matter. This is there for anyone else to see.

People have talked of cases where they were unable to change an item in a credit report despite the fact that it was demonstrated to be false. In her article, Cleaning Up your Credit Report- How to Correct Credit Report Errors and Remove Negative Information, Janet Wickell describes a situation with her son. Despite material proof, he was unable to alter his credit report.
