Credit Report for Those Considering Bankruptcy

Have you ever seen a credit report after someone has declared bankruptcy? It really is jsut plain spooky, because there's nothing there. Everything says "Discharged". This has happened to me. I declared bankruptcy in 1994 after an ex husband took me on a financial roller coaster, only to crash on me at the end.

Get a copy of your credit report before claiming bankruptcy!

This will alleviate some headaches if you decide to go through the bankruptcy after reading this article. You do not have to claim everything on your credit report that has an outstanding balance. If you decide that you would like to keep a credit card or two, you can deduct them from the list. But you had better pay them - on time and the minimum amount. There's no turning back after the final step.

After filing for my bankruptcy, and spending a beautiful July afternoon in a courthouse in Boston, Massachusetts only to feel completely humiliated when my lawyer diodn't show up (I later found out he had gotten a really bad sunburn the previous day), I had a huge lump in my stomach for about two weeks. I couldn't bare the thought of my new credit report when it came in the mail. Never mind when the discharge came in. I felt like a loser.

What I din't know about my bankruptcy and credit report

I didn't realize that potential employers look at your credit, as I had never had anyone check my credit for a job before. The first time that I had to answer questions about my bankruptcy was for a job, and let me tell you, I was once again humiliated. Needless to say that I din't get the job, but I did receive a very courteous letter in the mail explaining to me why I didn't get the position. What a surprise! It was my bankruptcy!
