Disputing Credit Report - a Simple Guide for Worrisome Moms (cont.)

Contributed by Lisa Marie

The credit bureaus will help you in disputing your credit report!

With errors in hand, go to the credit bureaus websites, one at a time, and enter your disputes. If you don't have a computer, you'll have to do it the old fashioned way with a pen and paper. These disputes must be in writing!

Very simply, type (or write) your disputes. Personally, I would number them for easier reference on both your part and the credit bureau's. Explain what you believe the error is for each item in question. Once you have completed your disputes, send or email as directed.

Now the fun begins. The credit bureau must submit your disputes to each creditor. You creditor the have ten days to either take the item in question off of your credit report, or prove (yes, prove) that the item is not an error. They then submit their findings back to the credit bureau. The credit bureau then notifies you of their findings and sends you a new copy of your credit report!

If your disputes are proven by your creditors to be fact, you then can write a note in your comment section of your credit report. The credit bureaus are more than happy to help you write the notes, if you feel that you will need some assistance in writing them.
