Why pay someone else to repair your credit, when you can do it yourself for free? If you are like most Americans, you may have fallen upon bad times in the past few years, this can wreak havoc on your credit report. Now that things have gotten better, you want to repair your ailing credit. But you don't want to pay to have it done. Don't worry, if you have a computer, a printer (or a typewriter) and some postage stamps you can do it yourself for free.
The first thing you will need to do is obtain your credit report, because if you don't know what is on your report, you can't repair it. You may be able to get a free credit report if you have been recently turned down for credit. Companies that deny you credit are required to provide you a written explanation of why you were turned down. In this explanation is the name and address of the credit reporting agency that was consulted.
Armed with this information you can get a free copy of your credit report. Many agencies have a way to get your report over the internet. It is quick and easy, and free.
If the agency in question does not allow you to get a report over the internet, then you will need to write them a letter. Be sure to provide your name, address, phone number, date of birth and social security number for identification purposes, along with a copy (keep the original) of the letter you got denying your credit. The agency will respond within three to four weeks.
