Googling credit report offered up a long list of businesses offering their services. A word of caution, they're not in business because they make a practice out of giving out free information. Credit reports like anything else are salable items. However, in order to get you interested they offer free samples. Even with these you have to be careful or you'll be charged.
I chose FreeCreditReport.com who, as their name indicates, will give you a free credit report.
In order to get my credit report, I had to register with FreeCreditReport.com. They got such information such as my name, address, phone, and social security number. This information was all gathered under the pretext of what was necessary to get my rating so I was O.K. with that.
Then the next screen came up and they wanted a credit card number. I thought it was free!? What I had to do was to sign up for membership to get my credit report. Then, If I chose, I could cancel my membership and would not be charged anything if I did so within a 30 day free trial period.
So I signed up got my credit report and then canceled - no charged incurred. The next day I received two e-mails from FreeCreditReport.com. The first one thanked me for becoming a member; the second one acknowledged by withdrawal.
There were many types of credit reports offered at FreeCreditReport.com. I was able to get a credit score.
