Free Credit Report Online- is It Really Free?

We've all seen the commercials on television and heard the ads on the radio for free credit reports available online. Are they really free? How do these companies make money giving out free credit reports?

Log onto the free credit report websites to see for yourself!

Or, you can listen to me.

Companies do have to make money in order to keep running, even non profit ones. So the thought that some company out there is actually willing to do a just service for free is next to impossible.

However, your credit report can be free if you're smart and can remember to log back onto their site in thirty days.

The way these companies supposedly give you a copy of your free credit report is simply this. They lure you to their site offering this free service. Now, with your credit card in hand, you must sign up for one of their "Free trial" offers, usually lasting the thirty days. This is why you will need to enter your credit card information. After the thirty days is over, they will bill you on a monthly basis via your credit card if you do not cancel the service.

The services can be anything credit relates, like credit fraud protection or credit monitoring. So be sure to cancel their service after the trial period and your credit report will in fact be "free"

There are three main credit bureaus - The free credit report is usually only good for one of them.

The three credit bureaus information on your credit report can vary greatly, so when checking your credit, you will need to get copies of all three. If you find an error on one, it may or may not be only the other two.
