Take advantage of the free credit report to clear up any outstanding issues.
If you find a free credit report program that is right for you, take advantage of the opportunity to view your credit report and clean it up. If you have a few small delinquencies, call up the creditors and make payment arrangements that you can afford. If you have several bigger delinquencies you should consider debt consolidation to get everything paid off. Getting a copy of your free credit report will help you get on the right track, and in a year's time you can give your credit report a full make over.
Be mindful that you may need more than one free credit report.
There are three major credit reporting agencies. So, if you get one free credit report you need to be sure that this is what is reporting from all three agencies so you have all of your credit information, not just a third. Most of the time, these free credit reports are from just one credit reporting agency. While you can pay off what is on just one report, if you are going to consider debt consolidation, you might as well include all of your debt, not just a third of it!
Whatever you decide to do where a free credit report is concerned, take advantage of the opportunity to clear your credit report of all incorrect information. You'll be amazed at what removing incorrect information will do for your credit score, let alone beginning to pay off your debts!
