By getting a credit report you know what's on file and you can dispute information you believe is false.
When you know the information being held against you, you are in a far superior position to defend yourself. Without this knowledge you are left hanging without really knowing why or how.
By getting the credit report you can get to the specifics. You can clear up any disputes by lending evidence to your cause. If there is an error in the credit report, you now become aware of it and have a much better chance of rectifying it. For example, if your credit report shows you defaulted on a loan and you have information which proves you didn't, you are then able to clear your name.
This is an example of the law looking out for the little guy. When most of the chips may be down, not all of them are. In the case of credit reports, the government has elected to watch out for those who are facing adverse conditions which seems entirely fair in such situations.
