When your debts are not payed off or the balances are high, then do not expect to get the best credit card rates the company offers. Credit lenders want to see that you handle credit responsibly. If you are in fault on any loans or payments make sure that you pay them in full before applying for a credit card. You never want to be in a deferment period or owe any money when applying for a credit card. Doing this could result in denial of your application, or acceptance of your application with higher rates and fees.
When researching a credit card company it is important to check all the public records that are available on the company. If it is a large company like Visa or American Express, you may not need to do as much research as you would on a smaller company. But what you do not know will hurt you. It is recommended to do full research on any company that will be extending you credit.
