How Important is Your Credit Report to You?

Contributed by Stephanie Litaker

What's worth more you to you - a good credit report or a good pair of shoes?

Your credit report should be one of the most important profiles you will ever create. That's right, it's a profile - a profile of you, your life, your spending habits and your payment habits. Some habits are good, and paying your bills, being responsible with your money and being careful with the amount of debt you incur all fall into this category.

You probably know a lot about the bad habits in your life: your addiction to caffeine, biting your fingernails, driving too fast, all of these and many more are all bad habits. While you may have trouble breaking those habits, you should make sure you do everything you can to keep your good habits on track. Let's talk about why that's important.

When you want to buy that great pair of shoes, and if you want to use a credit card that you don't yet have, your credit report will come into play. If you want to buy a car, your credit report will come into play. If you want to buy a new home, your credit report will come into play. If you want that great new job, your credit report may come into play. See the pattern here? Just about all aspects of your life will revolve around your credit report and what it says about you, your lifestyle, and the choices you make.

So you have a bad credit report? This is what you can to do repair the damage from the past

Filing for bankruptcy is a good way to get a bad mark on your credit report, but it's not the end of the world forever. It may change the world you live in for up to seven years, but you can move on from it. If you have filed for bankruptcy, you will need to be extra careful with all of your creditors for at least seven years, and work hard to rebuild your credit report.
