The first thing you want to do before you make a purchase online is to make sure that you are using a secure website. If you are not using a secure website do not enter your credit card information. You risk loosing your information to a multitude of online criminals when you do not use secured web pages. When making purchases online always read the privacy policy to see how your personal information is protected. You want to be sure that the company you are making a purchase with is not going to sell your information to partners or outside businesses.
Keeping your credit card information online and while shopping locally are two great ways that you can avoid being scammed by a criminal. But what about when you are at home or work? Where do you receive your mail? Do you leave it unattended in an unlocked box either at your home or place of employment? It is recommended to get a locked box for your mail if you cannot receive it upon delivery.
You should also cross shred all credit card offers, hospital bills, bank statements, or any other personal information you are throwing away. This will keep "dumpster divers" from obtaining your personal and credit card information.
