Credit card fraud, identity theft, and general internet based crime are the three largest growing crimes in America today. People are now looking for ways to use their credit card online without getting ripped off. There are several things that you can do to avoid being scammed into credit card fraud.

What is credit card fraud? Credit card fraud can happen just about anywhere and at any time. But if you use your credit card online you are more susceptible to having your personal information stolen. This is how credit card fraud works. A cashier at a store could swipe your credit card through a card reader, you credit card number could be copied from the internet, or simply your credit card gets stolen.

Once the criminal has obtained your credit card number and some of your personal information they can go on a shopping spree or open multiple accounts in your name. Using you credit card wisely and safely will help you hold onto your credit card information and keep it private.

Avoiding Credit Card Fraud While Shopping in Stores

There are a couple of ways that you can avoid having your credit card information stolen while you are shopping in centers, malls, and stores. First, always keep your wallet or purse near you. Never leave it unattended in a shopping cart or basket. Always make sure that you know where your credit cards are. Next, when ringing out at the register make sure that the cashier only swipes your card through the card reader attached to the register.

There are now credit card readers that are portable making it possible for criminals to steal your information in a couple of ways. Never give your credit card information to street vendors, door to door sales persons, or telemarketers.
