Some sates, like Massachusetts, have laws to get you one free copy of your credit report per year. Just do searches on your favorite search engine for the sites of Experian, Equifax and Trans Union as these are the most widely used credit reporting agencies. On their sites, they will have a link to a page which has a list of the states which offer free credit reports.
Now with your credit report in hand (and a highlighter, too! ), you can begin searching for errors. Once you have found all of the errors (there will probably be more than one), you need to file a dispute with the credit bureau. All submissions must be in writing, either by mail or email, so just remember that.
Once the bureau has your disputes, they are legally obligated to submit your issues to the creditors. The creditors then have ten days to prove that it not an error. If they fail to prove it, they must remove the item in question off of your report. When it's all said and done, the credit bureau will send you a brand new error free credit report.
ALso, keep in mind that there are three big bureaus out there, and the information contained by each could (and probably would) be different, so it's a very wise idea to be checking with all of them.
Now you're on your way to having an error free credit report.
