The truth is, well over half of Americans don't have an error free credit report. Errors can come in all shapes and sizes, and it would be a wise idea to check your credit report annually just in case there are some.
One of the biggest problems lies in the fact that you may have the same name as someone else in your family (ie. Jr., III, etc.) This is one of the most easily fixed- all you have to do is dispute it. When it's disputed, the creditor will see that you have different social security numbers and will have ten days to remove it from your credit report. Don't think that it will just go away! Creditors and credit bureaus will not know that there is an error until you point it out to them.
When logging onto one of these sites, use some caution. Be sure to read all of the fine print, including the terms and conditions. You will be needing a major credit card to access your report, because you will have to agree to their terms and conditions, which usually means accepting a free trial offer to whatever credit service they provide. These services can include credit monitoring and fraud protection, just o name a couple.
After your free trial has ended, your credit card will be charged a monthly fee to continue the service if you have not canceled it. So basically, if you decide to go this route, make a note on your calendar reminding yourself when to call and cancel.
