To avoid getting a bad credit card is simple, really: make the banks come to you with their offers of credit cards. There are enough offers out there, and you certainly get enough daily in your mailbox, that you can pick and choose which ones you want. I would suggest you go with a known financial institution. Avoid getting a credit card that is funded through Joe's Bank.
And no, I am not picking on people named Joe, just thinking that perhaps Joe's Bank is not as established and financially dependable as, say, Bank of America, or Sovereign Bank. Although, I'm sure there are some people who avoid Bank of America and Sovereign Bank like the plague, everyone has an opinion on what type of bank they like.
So now you suspect you may have a bad credit card. What was the giveaway? That you needed to mail your company stamps every so often so they can mail their statements out? Or was it the fact that your local merchant didn't accept your credit card emblazoned with a picture of Wanda's Credit Union? Regardless of the reason, there is a very easy way to get rid of your credit card: cut it up and write a letter to the company requesting they close your account.
Of course, if past actions are any indication, you may need to send a book of stamps along with that, so the financial institution can send you back a letter acknowledging that yes indeed they have closed your account.
