Is There Such a Thing As Legal Credit Repair? (cont.)

Contributed by Caryn e Zent

If you are not sure if the credit repair plans offered are legal, check them out first. www.ftc.gov (Federal Trade Commission) has many resources to assist you in determining of something is legal. Anything a company can do for you, you can do for yourself free. Remember that if you commit fraud, even at the behest of a company helping you clean up your credit, then you are subject to prosecution.

Legal Credit Repair

As a consumer, you can dispute items on your credit report for free. Most credit reports come with forms or links to use in disputing information. You need to file a dispute in writing and send a copy to the creditor you are disputing. You should itemize each item you are questioning, explain your reasoning behind your dispute, and request that the item(s) be investigated.

If there is an error, in many cases you can ask that a corrected report be sent to those who received a report containing an error. For assistance with helping yourself, finding legitimate help and determination of scams, try the Federal Trade Commission site listed above, or go to www 1stopcreditrepair.com or www.usacreditrepair com.
