Yes, as a college student, you can apply and receive a credit card. However, you need to research all the aspects of having a credit card before you sign on the dotted line. You wouldn't date someone without getting to know them first, the same should hold true with your credit card companies. Don't enter into a relationship with one until you know who they are and what they offer. Just like dating, there are plenty of fish in the sea. If you're not careful with your credit card, that harmless looking piece of plastic can take on a life of its own and then look out!
Credit card companies are clever when it comes to having college students as card holders. They will send representatives to campuses large and small all over the country. They lure college students in with free gifts, like CDs or gift certificates to their favorite pizza shops. Then, while they have a captive audience, they paint this beautiful picture of having money for everything from books to spring break.
What they don't tell you is that if you handle the credit card irresponsibly, you will be in over your head. Why don't they tell you that? Because the longer it takes you to pay off your bill, the more money they make.
The first thing to remember when applying for a credit card is you don't have to sign with the first company you talk to. You are allowed, and definitely should, shop around first. Consider your options. If you're not getting a good offer, lower interest rates, higher grace periods, etc., then that card is probably not the right one for you.
