A pre paid credit card is one that you determine what the credit limit will be. A deposit is made into your account and your credit limit is equal to your deposit. Some credit card issuers will set a minimum and maximum amount that you can deposit, but usually those are the only limitations. The cards can be used just like any other credit card.
With so many kids away at college and with the busy schedules they keep, it's hard for parents and students to get together. Many parents are turning to to the pre paid cards to make sure they keep their kids in a constant supply of pizza. Parents can transfer money from their checking account, for a small fee, to the card. The pre paid cards are also used to set up responsible spending habits and allows parents to monitor how much money their kids are spending through regular monthly statements and even Internet access.
Pre paid credit cards are a smart way to make sure your college student has access to money but it also guarantees that he or she won't graduate with plenty of debt.
Since the cards can be used practically anywhere, this type of card also makes a great birthday or Christmas gift, especially for those who are hard to buy for.
Pre paid credit cards can usually be found with any of the major Visa and Master Card companies. However, you can also get them at your grocery stores, banks and even online. But as with a regular credit card, make sure you read everything before you purchase the card. There may be a fee to purchase the card and then more fees when you try to load, or add money, to the card again.
