The first step on the road to repairing your credit yourself is to get copies of your credit report from the three big credit bureaus. Simply access the websites of Experian, Equifax and Trans Union (all separately, of course) to get them
They do charge a fee to do this for you. It's usually under $30.00 each and well worth the investment.
By repairing your credit yourself, you will learn a ton about credit reports and how they work! You will see who has accessed your credit report within the last year, as well as your previous addresses and employers. It is imperative that you make sure this information is accurate, as if it is incorrect, it will make your credit look worse.
Now is the time where you need to go through every single piece of information on your report. By utilizing a highlighter to note mistakes, you will have an easier time time writing to the credit bureaus about the errors.
Be sure to check spelling and accuracy of addresses. If future creditors think that you have moved around more than you have, it doesn't help your chances for a small business loan. Check the dates of employment for accuracy, too. If there are errors, highlight them!
Now for the big stuff. This is the part where people get confused and don't think that they can repair their own credit. You can do this yourself. Start at the first creditor. Check the information listed regarding your credit, such as maximum limit, if it was paid on time, etc. Be sure to look in the comments section for any noted your creditors might have left for future creditors to read. Usually it is blank- Creditors use this space frequently for customers using credit counseling services (which is bad for your credit).
