Contrary to what a lot of the dept consolidation companies want you to think, you can repair credit on your own. I know, your thinking she must be crazy, she's never seen my dept! Ok I'll give you that, I have never seen your dept. I have seen mine and that is enough for me. It is never easy to repair credit. But, almost always it is something that can be done.
Get a credit report. This should always be the first step in your quest for better credit, why? Because let's face it we don't always remember every little bill that has come our way when we haven't had the funds to take care of it. This way you can clearly see what everyone else can see and fix it. It is simple to get a free credit report. Be careful however, as with any situation where you are giving out personal information you want to be careful and know the reputation of the company and if it will be shared in any way.
From your credit report make a list of those you owe and call them, make arrangements. If for any reason there are things that you do not owe and have never owed, contact those first. Get them out of the way. If there are any items you have already taken care of or are in the process of taking care of, contact them and inquire as to why this has not been taken off your credit and how long will it take for this to be removed. Then comes the hard part, calling those you do owe money to.
This has to be the hardest part to the process of repairing your credit. If the person you get a hold of does not want to work with you, or they treat you badly ask to speak to a supervisor. Yes you owe the company money, this does not give them the right to abuse you in any way.
