If you're the kind of person who needs to keep off those 5 to 10 vanity pounds, then signing up for an online credit report is right for you. Not only can you check that elusive and all-important FICO score, but you can take keep watch over even the slightest credit belly bulge.
Among the online credit report services available, most allow you a baseline one-bureau check, to an upgraded "3-in-1" which includes reports from the big three, Experian, Trans Union and Equifax. Naturally the data from all three would be redundant to some extent, but if fraud prevention is part of your agenda, then making sure all three are free of inaccuracies would be to your benefit.
Another benefit to having access to your online credit report from all three bureaus would be to check for variance among them. As with fraud checking, checking for accuracy in all three profiles is an exercise in ruling out a problem. In this case, to find out if you're too fat to wear the pants, you have to buy them before you try them on.
For the perfectionist, many online credit report services offer you the option of weekly emails regarding any new activity taking place in your file. This can include documentation of late payments, any new inquiries made, and any new account openings. Inquiries and openings naturally should only have been made with your knowledge, so if there is something you don't recognize, you can pursue disputing and possibly removing it.
