I am urging you to get a copy of your credit report before buying a new home in case there are errors- disputing them can take time, so be prepared!
You're planning on buying the new home of your dreams. You find it! ! ! You're excited, you're elated, what can go wrong?
You head to the bank to get your mortgage. Your credit is pulled by the very nice loan officer. You see no problem as you have always paid your bills on time. Everything is great, until you find out that there is information on your credit report that chouldn't be there. They have you listed as being unemployed for three years and behind on your boat payment- But you've had the same job for the last twelve years, and you are deathly afraid of water, so why would you even have a boat?
So now, you leave the bank absolutely mortified, without a mortgage or a boat. Now what do you do? This is when you need to dispute your credit report.
Well my friend, if you would have done this before you thought about buying a new home, you'd be all set right now. But since you didn't, here's what you need to do.
Get copies of your credit reports from the three main credit bureus-Trans Union, Equifax and Experian. You can access their websites for information on getting a copy of your credit report. There is a fee involved in this, unless you are lucky enough to live in one of the states who mandates free annual credit reports (like Massachusetts) for it's residents.
