Keeping a sharp eye on your credit report during a divorce is probably the smartest thing that you can do. What's yours is yours, and what's their's is their's, right? Keep this in mind when you are applying for future credit.
The time to do this is before the divorce is fianl, as it is much more difficult to fight about your report after everything is settled. As soon as you've contacted an attorney to help you with your divorce, you should contact the three big credit bureaus (Trans Union, Equifax adn Experian) so that you can have a copy of your credit reports going into this.
Oh course not, silly! Nothing is free. You should know that by now. It can be free, however, if you're smart about it.
When you go to one of those so-called free web sites to access your credit report, make sure that you have your credit card handy- you'll be needing it. They will give you a free copy of your credit report after you give them your credit card and agree to the terms and conditions. The terms and conditions usually include, but are not limited to agreeing to a free trial of their credit service, whatever that may be.
If you can remember to cancel the service after the free trial has ended, your credit report will in fact be free. But for those of us who would forget their head if it wasn't attached to the rest of their body, this can cost us a monthly fee until we remember to cancel the service.
