Before you decide to use a debt consolidation company's program, take a look at yourself first. Analyze your spending habits - honestly. Can you find places to cut back? Of course you can! Limit your eating out to only once a week or hold off buying that new CD until you can really afford it. Most of the time the problem with debt is the debtor. Make yourself a budget that you can live with. Don't panic! A budget doesn't mean you have to cut out all of your entertainment! It just means you have to cut back a little until you get your spending and your debt under control.
It's no doubt, looking into a debt consolidation program can be demoralizing. What you have to keep in mind is that it has no reflection on your self-worth as a person. In fact, it's quite the contrary. It shows that you are a responsible citizen that has gotten into a little bit of financial trouble but want to make it right. Too many people take the "easy" way out by filing bankruptcy. Don't get me wrong, sometimes this can't be avoided, either. However, it should be used as a last resort.
While debt consolidation may still reflect negatively on your credit report, it will also show that you paid the debt off - which always looks better than a bankruptcy that doesn't pay the debt.
