Choosing the right credit card company for you teen will help them learn to budget, how to handle credit, and how to handle money in general. There are hundreds of credit card companies that you could choose. Doing the right research could help your teen make their money work for them. Getting and understanding a credit card and your credit at a young age is likely to result in your being better with money later in life. Teaching your teen how credit works and what having good credit means could help them be more successful in how they deal with money in their adult lives.
First, know that your teen is mature enough for a credit card. A couple of other things to think about before hand are: who will be paying for the credit card? or should we get a debit account? Making these decisions beforehand will help you choose a credit card company faster.
There are millions of companies it seems, for you and your teenager to choose from. A good place to start is at your personal bank. If your own financial institution does not offer a credit card, or a credit card that you want, start at the big companies and work your way down to the smaller ones. For example Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Chase, and Fleet are examples of companies you could start with.
One thing that you can teach your teen here is that you need to make a smart investment with you money. Your money should work for you, not you working for the money. When applying with a credit card company, let your teen know that it is important to read about all the fees and charges associated with the credit card they choose.
