There are many different types of people and companies that can look at your credit report. These can range from a single person who you are wanting to rent from to a bank or even an employer. It is very common for people to request permission from you to pull your credit report for almost all purchases you make.
Anytime you apply for a credit card the company can pull your credit report. They often pull your report to check and see how many credit cards you already have and how you pay your creditors. Some credit cards determine if they will give you credit by your credit score. This is a score based on the way you pay your creditors. Credit card companies can also pull your credit report if you are behind on payment. They will pull your report to get your most current address and phone number.
They will also look at your report to see who you are paying if you are not paying them. These companies can then contact a creditor you are paying to see if they have any updated information on you in the event the information they have on you is outdated. Let's say you open a credit card in 1997 and stop making your regular payments in 2004.
A lot can happen in 7 years and you more than likely do not have the same address or phone number that you did when you filled out your credit card application. The creditor will contact someone you are paying to try and obtain current information.
